God is really only another artist. He invented the giraffe, the elephant, and the cat.
He has no real style, He just goes on trying other things.
~ Pablo Picasso
It seems that the past few posts have been sort of navel-gazing posts.
So how ’bout some art??
I love working on boards, as I do a lot of abusive things to my canvases. I slap on paint and glue and papers and inks and I sand things to rough them up. I scribble on them, and I use collage elements. All of that working and re-working makes for my needing a surface that won’t tear apart or disintegrate.
And I will use just about anything; really, nothing is sacred lol. I have used fence posts, scraps of the wood my husband uses to build stuff, old drawer faces and cabinet doors, and pieces of furniture that people gave away for free.
My fave is 1/4″ sheets of wood from Home Depot, I guess it’s plywood or sheeting or panels? I don’t know what to call it, but it comes in 4 x 8 sheets of wood, and it’s thin. They’ll cut it up for me so I usually get them to cut it into several big pieces and then have the hubs cut them up further as I go. I can spend 14 bucks and get a pile of canvases to work on.
I have also used 2 x 4’s that I have them cut down into smaller pieces for me. Those are super for smaller artworks that I can put little foots on and they’ll stand up all by themselves…so cute!
Home Depot is one of my favorite places to go for inspiration, by the way. The hubs and I have regular “artist dates” to just go and wander around and look at materials and get ideas. Our kiddos roll their eyes at us, so thankfully we can usually leave them at home! But so often you can get the same materials for far cheaper at the Home Depot than in an art store, because it’s not marketed to artists. You just have to look around a bit and see what’s what.
Okay, so I love using these boards for a lot of my artwork. I’ve made what is turning out to be the start of a series of Mommy Love works…starting with these elephants that I made to go over the baby’s cradle. And it has grown the series, and the wall by her bed, quite a bit! The super cool thing, is right away she started studying the art hanging in our room. She ponders the art right by her corner, as well as the art I have hanging in other areas in our bedroom. She has expanded her art study to the art in the rest of the house as she has grown a bit.
And she’s recently taken quite a notice to my arting while I’m actively creating! Looks like I have a mini-me artist 🙂
